Native American collections are at the heart of many museums, but museums have often excluded Native stakeholders in decisions. Join Dr. Deana Dartt (Coastal Band, Chumash), an anthropologist and museum expert, to discuss how changing standards can encourage collaboration with Native communities and address the colonial legacy of museums.
Earlier this year, Dr. Dartt help to write the Standards for Museums with Native American Collections (SMNAC), a comprehensive document designed for museums with Native collections. The SMNAC provides actionable recommendations toward accountability to Native stakeholders, collaboration with Native communities as well as addresses cultural sensitivity and competency inherent in recognizing the colonial legacy of museums. In this lively presentation, Dr. Dartt discuss how to move museums into alignment with Native goals and values.
