The museum has maintained an active program of field research in archaeology since 1937. Today, our field schools offer graduate and undergraduate students practical training in excavation techniques and other field methods at some of North America's earliest cultural sites.

The museum is located on Kalapuya ilihi, the traditional homeland of the Kalapuya people, many of whom are now citizens of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde and the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians.
