Stepping onto the UO

Geology surrounds us. Even something as ordinary as the steps by the Millrace have a story. We can identity the rock type as basalt by the fine grains and dark color. Basalt forms from lava that has erupted onto Earth’s surface. It is the main component of the oceanic crust. Eugene has a large amount of basalt, which can be found throughout campus as decorative stones and building materials.
