Have you ever wondered what the inside of a volcano looks like?
Crater Lake, although filled with water now, was once an enormous volcano called Mt. Mazama. More than 7000 years ago this volcano erupted so violently that it collapsed downward into its emptied magma chamber. Thousands of years of rainfall filled up the resulting landscape to form Crater Lake. One of the deepest lakes in the world, Crater Lake has two small volcanic islands, tall, cliff-like banks, and breathtaking views. Klamath Native Americans have an oral tradition of the battle between the creator and the god of the underworld, who fought and destroyed Mt. Mazama, to create Crater Lake.
