Erosion of Basaltic Lava

Sahalie Falls

Photograph and text by Anthony Downey

As you stand at the waterfall’s edge, you may not realize you are watching erosion occur. Here, a powerful waterfall breaks down basalt from a 3,000 year old lava flow. The eroded sediments are carried downriver and eventually to the sea.

Cascade Eruption

Belknap Volcano, McKenzie Pass

Photograph and text by Anthony Downey

At first glance, you may see just a dark-colored hill. But this Cascade volcano erupted just 2,000 years ago, leaving the mountainside covered with basalt. Look closer and you can see where the lava flowed.
