The tower at the southeast corner of Cascade Hall is graced by a bust of Thomas Condon (1822-1907) in hammered sheet copper by Wayne Chabre (1990). Condon came to Oregon in 1852 as a Congregational missionary first in St. Helens, then Forest Grove, and finally the Dalles. His pioneering collections of plant and mammal fossils from central Oregon made him an early champion of Darwin’s theory of evolution. He was appointed as a foundation professor in Natural Sciences of the University of Oregon in 1876. Thomas Condon could be considered the founding father of Oregon geology.
