Turn west to the main entrance of the Knight Library. The steps of the library are made of Salem Limestone. This limestone was deposited during the Mississippian age in a shallow sea 350 million years ago in Indiana. This particular stone is composed of tiny fossils and an aggregate called “oolite,” which is a small round grain commonly found in limestone.
