Step inside the Columbia 150 lobby and take a look at the large map of Oregon. See if you can find the relatively new volcanic mountains of the central Cascades. Find Crater Lake and Mount Hood on the map.

Looking to the southeast, can you find the Steens
Mountains? These large blocks have been faulted above the valleys and is the northernmost extension of the Basin and Range Province that extends into Utah and Nevada. Find Eugene, Salem, and Portland on the map. These cities in the Willamette Valley sit between the Coast Range and the Cascades. Geologists believe that this area was once part of the Pacific Ocean because fossils of sea animals that are found throughout the valley.
