Travel west on 15th Avenue passing Hayward Field and the Student Recreation Center, both on your left. Notice the hexagonal basalt columns that create the waterfall. These large columns are pieces of basalt. The hexagon shape is the natural symmetrical effect that can take place in the formation of basalt during the cooling process. This particular basalt is characterized by columnar jointing which produces six-sided prisms of basalt forming at right angles to the flow. You can see more basalt columns, such as these, on the west side of Skinner Butte. Do you remember what type of rock forges by the cooling and solidification of molten rock?*
