FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: How long of a commitment will I be asked to make?
Volunteers should be willing to commit at least one year of service at approximately twelve hours per month.

Q: What kind of work can I do?
As representatives of the museum to the public, MNCH volunteers are a valuable and integral part of the museum team. They contribute in several ways, including: giving tours to school and community groups, greeting and providing information about the exhibition to visitors, assisting in the museum store, and participating in special events. Additional projects can be pre-arranged.

Q:What does training involve?
Individuals who wish to join the volunteer program are introduced to the museum’s collections, programs, and policies through a course offered by the Public Programs Division. The course, Museum Interpretation, consists of five training sessions which familiarize volunteers with the MNCH’s collections, exhibits, and resources, as well as other issues that relate to the museum’s focus and temporary exhibitions. Volunteers who complete the course receive Museum Interpreter Certification to begin volunteering.

Q: Why should I consider becoming a volunteer?
Volunteers can expect to participate in satisfying experiences working with children and the community. There are opportunities to expand your understanding of Oregon’s natural and cultural landscapes and be challenged by new ideas. Being involved with the volunteer program increases involvement with the University and the wider community.

Q: Who can volunteer?
The MNCH welcomes enthusiastic individuals of all backgrounds and abilities.

Q: Do I need a college degree?
Being a volunteer at the MNCH doesn't require a Ph.D.—or any college experience. In fact, what matters most is a willingness to learn, an enthusiasm about natural and cultural history and a desire to share this enthusiasm with others.

Q: Are there age restrictions?
Volunteer applicants must be at least 16 years of age.

Q: How much does it cost?

A $40 fee includes training sessions and materials as well as a one year membership to the museum.
