Pre-school  - Elementary Students

OREGON - Where Past is Present

60-90 minutes
Pre-school-2nd grade
Students will participate in a scavenger hunt that explores colorful dioramas and murals illustrating Oregon's Native American history and culture.   To complement the program, choose from two hands-on activities, or make time for both:  
    • Activity 1:   Students wear Northwest Coast style capes and listen to and discuss the story, Storm Boy.    
    • Activity 2:   Students help build a replica of a camas oven like those used in the Willamette Valley.

Native Americans in Oregon
60-90 minutes

Grades 2 - 5

Explore the diverse cultures of Oregon, past and present.   Students handle artifacts in "artifact investigation" and small groups work together to uncover clues and explore the exhibit hall.

Geology Rocks and Fossils are Fantastic:

60-90 minutes

Grades 2-5 

Investigate Oregon's landscapes and the geologic events that formed our region.   Students will be in awe when they learn about giant ancient beavers, touch a mammoth tooth, compare volcanic rocks, and imagine the effects of the Ice Age Floods.  


Campus Scavenger Hunt:
40-60 minutes
Grades 3-12
This self-guided activity is a great addition to any school program.  Students visit the university’s natural areas and explore the science behind them - a great way to introduce students to the UO campus.   This program is free and easy for a teacher, parent, or classroom volunteer to lead.   Download the Directions and Map and the Clues to get started (PDF Files ):


Walk a Mile in These Shoes

15-30 minutes (add this program to any of the above)

Grades K-5

What can we learn about culture through the study of shoes?  Open students' minds and explore the unusual when you visit Walk a Mile in These Shoes- The stories they tell.

Middle – High School Students

Humans and Environmental Change:
60-90 minutes
Grades 6-12

How has the environment shaped Oregon's cultures?   How has the landscape been affected by culture over time? Students will investigate artifacts and consider various perspectives as they learn about the history and culture of Native Americans and Euro-American settlers in Oregon.


Cultural Scene Investigation:
60-90 minutes

Grades 6-12
What does it take to be an archaeologist?  This program focuses on the interdisciplinary nature of archaeology and engages students in math, science, and art as they observe and record data about artifacts on the provided artifact analysis form (PDF File ).  Students explore exhibits with a knowledgeable guide, learn oral traditions, and become experts in their own topic areas.


Walk a Mile in These Shoes
20 minutes (add this program to any of the above)
Grades 6-12
