Tools of the artist, traditionally, are the brush and canvas, chisel, musical instrument, dance, pen, etc. Now science and technology have added the still and motion picture camera, sound recorder, and electronic synthesizer.

Don Hunter

Don Hunter has been interested in sound recording for seven decades, always innovating and improving upon existing technology. In 1932, while still in high school, he built his first microphone out of a cigar box. He reverse-engineered a record player for his first recorder, equipping it with a blunt recording needle to emboss sound into blank pre-grooved RCA disks.

In 1946 Hunter became the first director of the UO audio/visual department, one of the first programs of its kind in the United States. He served in this position until his retirement in 1977, dedicating almost every spare moment to his passion for collecting "dying" sights and sounds. He became seriously interested in photography soon after natural color Kodachrome slide film became available; beginning his vast slide collection in 1938.
