Deposition and erosion help create the landscape we see today.
Why is there a large rock smack-dab in the middle of the beach? This piece of sandstone is located off the Oregon coast and is resistant to erosion. It’s what remains after waves and wind have eroded away the surrounding rock, leaving it isolated in the middle of the beach. It took thousands of years for the erosion to shape this rock, but the rock itself was first deposited more than 15 million years ago. Each layer in the rock tells its own unique story before it too, becomes weathered away.
